Schiff’s Endorsement for the U.S. Senate by the Los Angeles Times

The Los Angeles Times has approved Adam Schiff as the Chief candidate for the California Senate seat in the 2024 election.

The Publication’s editorial board supports him by saying, “He stands out for his extraordinary leadership over the last several years.”

They selected him to replace the late California Senator Dianne Feinstein due to his noteworthy leadership to protect the country’s democracy from former President Donald Trump.

He has stood for the seat with two other Democratic contenders Barbara Lee and Katie Porter. All three are experienced members of the House who would represent California well in the Senate.

However, according to the Times, Schiff is an exceptional leader out of the three who has the power to speak against Trump if he returns to the post of president in the upcoming elections.

Why the Endorsement?

The Times believes that Schiff has done remarkably well in his three decades of political career.

He has been known to dig deep into a matter and take out practical solutions regarding the situation, also known well for his reliability.

Before becoming a member of the House in 2001, he had served four years in the State Legislature and has been a constant target of Trump’s supporters because of his strong stand against the former President.

His Notable works
He has earlier worked as the chair of the House Intelligence Committee from 2019 to 2023.

As the chief of the first impeachment investigation against Trump, he did remarkably well in Trump’s Ukraine scandal where Trump used his political status for personal benefits. He was appointed by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This was considered the most notable work of his career.

In 2021, he was one of the members of the Jan 6 committee for another investigation against Trump who was the conspirator behind the Capitol riot on Jan 6 as an attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

The Times chose him for his unflinching support from both sides and his commitment to working with diverse communities. Schiff currently has the support of more than 60% of the California House members including the former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

He decided for the Senate seat in 2023, after he was removed by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from the Intelligence Committee.

The Times Importance

The Los Angeles Times is the largest metropolitan daily newspaper in the country with more than 40 million online readers monthly along with over 1.6 million readers.

The editorial board sees Trump as a threat to democracy proven from time to time with the piled-up cases against him, questioning his run for the presidency. Schiff has proved his leadership and determination to fight against Trump in the past due to which they endorsed him to the Senate seat.

Schiff’s other two democratic competitors also have experience in their fields. Lee has served in Congress for 25 years and is known for her standing out during difficult votes like the only member to vote against the war in Afghanistan. Along with that, she is known for supporting sensitive issues like LGBTQ, and marriage equality.

Porter has been in the House since 2018 and has been known for her ability to argue with government officials intelligently on important issues during hearings.

Republicans have also stood for the seat including Steve Garvey and attorney Eric Early. Garvey has no prior knowledge about politics as he has never held any public office, making him an unfit candidate for the Senate seat.

Even though Schiff has been appointed by the Times, an election will be held on March 5 and the Senator will be chosen fairly regardless of the party they belong to.
