Alec Baldwin has been indicted for the fatal shooting incident at the set of his movie Rust.

In October 2021, Alec Baldwin unintentionally killed the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal on the set of Rust.

A grand jury found him guilty on Jan 19 for an involuntary manslaughter charge in the 2021 fatal shooting in New Mexico, months after his case was dismissed.

The jury consisted of 12 members, out of which eight agreed to convict Alec for one charge which was involuntary manslaughter. If he is convicted, he could face up to 18 months in prison.

The Incident

Alec was the lead actor along with the co-producer of the movie. During a rehearsal in Santa Fe, he was pointing a gun at the cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, and it went off, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza. Alex said he had no idea that the gun was loaded with ammunition.

Revival of the Case

The case was brought to the grand jury in Santa Fe by Special Prosecutors this week after they received a new analysis of the gun that was used. 

The special prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis presented the evidence to the New Mexico grand jury which decided to indict the actor on the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Baldwin’s attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro look forward to the criminal trial and are determined to fight the charge, whereas attorney Gloria Allred, representing Hutchin’s family said that her clients want to know the truth behind the incident.

NBC got hands-on 5 exclusive videos in November, where Baldwin was holding a prop gun while filming for the movie. 

In two of the videos, he rearranged the crew members as a concern for their safety. The crew was shooting for two weeks before the shooting was shut down.

In Baldwin’s interviews with ABC News as well as CNN, he has tried to maintain innocence by saying he was unaware that the gun had live ammunition after assistant director Dave Halls had declared it cold.

Halls was charged with misdemeanor and negligence of using a deadly weapon in March and was sentenced to serve six months of probation.

In December 2021, Baldwin said in an interview with ABC News that someone was responsible for the incident, but it wasn’t him.

 New Analysis of the Gun

The whole case is carried out in secrecy. Two crewmembers were seen in the court, one was the witness to the incident and the other had left the set day before the incident.

The special prosecutors had dismissed the charge of manslaughter against Alec in April as they were informed about the gun’s modification just before the shooting which caused its malfunction.

The early investigation conducted by the FBI confirmed that firearms of the design could easily go off without pulling the trigger.

 Later, they provoked the charge after receiving a new analysis of the gun.

The new analysis was confirmed by the experts in ballistics and forensic testing who re-assembled the gun after the parts were broken during the investigation by the FBI. The analysis revealed that the trigger was pulled which contradicts Alec’s statement.

The weapons supervisor, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has pleaded not guilty to two charges, involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering. Her trial will begin in February.

The case has put a lot of pressure on his career as well as his finances. He had to put his home in the Hamptons for a sale of $19 million which had appeared in a real estate advertisement.
