As part of the retailer’s class-action lawsuit settlement, Walmart customers may be eligible to receive up to $500 in response to claims that the company overpriced for specific products.
Walmart was accused of “falsely inflated” the pricing of several sold-by-weight products, including those that contain the retailer’s “rollbacks,” or discounts, in a lawsuit that was first brought in late 2022 and then revised in 2023.
It claimed that consumers were tricked into believing they were getting a deal at the register on items including meats, poultry, and shellfish.
In the lawsuit, it was claimed that Walmart also falsely advertised the weight of bagged produce, including oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines, as being greater than the actual weight of those food items.
Walmart denied any misconduct and came to a settlement late last year to pay $45 million to customers. Walmart said it “will continue providing our customers with everyday low prices to help them save money on the products they want and need” in a statement to CNN on Friday.
Although we continue to refute the accusations, we think a resolution would benefit all sides.
Any Walmart customer who purchased weighted products and/or bagged citrus at a Walmart store, supercenter, or neighborhood market store in the US or Puerto Rico between October 19, 2018, and January 19, 2024, may be qualified for a cash payout, according the settlement’s terms.
Among them are:
A customer can attest to purchasing up to 50 weighted items and/or bagged citrus in-person at a Walmart store within the settlement class period for $10 without a receipt.
–$15 without a receipt or other evidence of purchase, however they can vouch for purchasing bagged citrus or any number of weighted items between 51 and 75.
-$20 without invoices or other documentation of purchase, but they can vouch for purchasing between 76 and 100 weighted items and/or bagged fruit.
A $25 transaction without a receipt or other documentation attesting to the purchase of at least 101 weighted items and/or bagged fruit.
– Customers will get 2% of “the total cost of the substantiated Weighted Goods and Bagged Citrus Purchased,” up to $500, with receipts or other proof of purchase for each weighted good and/or bagged citrus purchased in a Walmart store within the settlement class period.
