Georgia, especially Atlanta, has become a significant hub for human trafficking in the United States.Â
Based on data from the World Population Review, Georgia has a relatively high rate of human trafficking victims, ranking seventh in the country. Approximately four out of every 100,000 individuals in the state fall victim to this crime.
During the years 2003 to 2007, and once again in 2018, Atlanta experienced a significant amount of sex trade activity.Â
In 2023, Atlanta ranked second in the number of human trafficking cases, following closely behind Washington, DC.Â
Based on data from the FBI, Atlanta ranks among the top 14 cities in the United States for domestic minor sex trafficking, with approximately 300 girls being recruited into trafficking every month.
The Fight Against Human Trafficking
In Georgia, federal courts have recently filed six new criminal human trafficking cases in 2021, resulting in the conviction of five individuals.Â
Out of the defendants currently facing charges, the majority, 84 percent or 26 individuals, are accused of sex trafficking, while the remaining 16 percent or 5 individuals are facing charges related to forced labor.
In 2021, a significant number of convicted criminal human trafficking offenders in Georgia federal courts were ordered to make reparation payments.Â
This highlights the legal consequences faced by these individuals. This marks a positive turn following a downward trend in convictions and reparation orders since 2016.
